Neoscan: benchtop micro-CT when every sample fits in your hand

A great deal of micro-CT work involves samples you could hold in one hand: a bone specimen, a dental sample, a battery cell, an insect, a core plug, a small electronic assembly. For that work, a large industrial system is capacity you pay for, house, and never use.

Neoscan builds micro and nano-CT for exactly this scale — high resolution on small samples, in a footprint that belongs in a laboratory.

All are benchtop systems operating up to roughly 150 kV — matched to small, relatively low-density samples rather than dense metal parts.

What it is used for

Neoscan spans two research worlds that rarely share instruments:

  • Life science — bone microarchitecture, dental specimens, small-animal samples, soft tissue with contrast agents, and the structural questions that follow a study
  • Materials — battery cells and electrode structure, carbon-fibre composites, additive-manufactured parts, geological cores and porous media

The common thread is not the discipline but the sample: small, and worth keeping intact. Because nothing is sectioned, the same specimen can be scanned, measured, and then used for histology, mechanical testing or further study.

Why benchtop changes behaviour

An instrument in your own laboratory is used differently from one booked in a shared facility. Exploratory scans happen. A questionable sample gets checked rather than assumed. Method development becomes iterative instead of a single carefully rationed session. For groups where micro-CT is a routine part of the work rather than an occasional service purchase, that difference usually matters more than any specification.

Where a different system fits

Large or dense parts. Beyond roughly 150 kV and hand-sized samples, this is the wrong class of instrument — that is a configurable laboratory system such as RX Solutions EasyTom, or Lumafield for the largest parts.

Installed or immovable objects. Anything that cannot be brought to the bench belongs to robotic open-geometry CT.

Composition rather than structure. If the question is which elements are present, that is micro-XRF, not CT.
